Love Defined

(cross posted with The Blanket Stitch)

Hello! For today's post I have been busy making a wonderful heart decoration that was picked up from a craft shop, and I have been umming and ahhing over what to do with it ever since. Its actually taking me a fair while to get it made, due to not really knowing what I wanted.

When I made my 'Imagine' canvas a few weeks ago I loved the colour of the paint so much that I ended up painting the heart while I was at it, however, from there I didn't know what I wanted to do, so it had been left untouched, until now.

I was also making something for Fathers Day, and when I finished that I decided to keep going and finally finished the heart!

DSCF6559

I started with a smaller heart I had painted that I knew I wanted to attached to the main heart. Using a Paris stamp and Victorian Velvet Distress Ink, I created this look on the smaller heart.

On the larger heart I stamped, again using Victorian Velvet Distress Ink, a sheet music background.

Using some pink wire, I added this to heart, and wound it round the stick.

For the centre of the piece, I used some cream paper, stamped quite haphazardly with Old Paper Distress Ink and edged with Vintage Photo to give it an old look. I then rolled the top and the bottom to make it look like an old scroll. Then, using a Tim Holtz stamp I stamped the centre of the scroll, using black archival ink.

Underneath the scroll I have placed a tag shaped piece of card, with a floral pattern.

To the right hand side of the scroll I have added a small silk/fabric flower.

This was really simple to make in the end, and I left it with this as I feared if I added anymore it would become to fussy.

The final outcome... ...What do you think?

Fathers Day Craft: A personalised Canvas

For today's blog post I wanted to share with you a little canvas that I have made my dad as part of his Father's day present. It was super easy to make and you can do anything to customise it so it suits your dad.

I started by painted my canvas my chosen colour, for my dad my only option was blue, plus I wanted to do something special on the front to represent him, and blue would be pretty pivotal for that. I used acrylic paint across the canvas.

Down the left hand side I used a piece to string, to break up the canvas. I tied a bow in the top and glued it too the canvas.

I also added this cardboard 'Dad' sign I found in my stash, just so the string didn't look too bare against the canvas.

I found some letter tiles I had in my stash, and using Chipped Saphire Tim Holtz Distress Ink, I stamped them to match the canvas.

As you can see from the above photo, everything was very blue while I was working!

I found this tag, and stamped it in Chipped Saphire Distress Ink. Then, using a stencil, I copied 'Love, Amy' coloured it in using a black sharpie and attached it under the Cardboard 'Dad' sign.

I attached the 'Dad' tiles to the top of the canvas, using 2 sticky pads on each tile.

For the centre piece I drew the Torquay United Logo (Dad's favourite football team - he was born and raised in Torquay, Devon, UK) and painted it using yellow acrylic paint and then glued it to the centre of the canvas.

I am really pleased with the outcome, its just how I imagined it. I am sure he will really love it, I will keep you all updated!

This is a really simple idea, easy to make and you can make it to completely suit you Dad's personality.

If you try this don't forget to leave me a comment below, linking to your post and/or photos, I would love to see them!

How to: Become a Blogger

Over the years I have often had many questions about becoming a blogger. The internet makes it so easy for you to have your say, document something and share your world with others.

As humans we're naturally interested in what other people are doing and the blogosphere is a great way to read about new topics, share others lives and get ideas to implement into your own life, whether it be a thought, a quote, a recipe or a DIY project.

I've put together a list of questions people have asked me over my years of being a blogger (and in the periods where I have taken time off) and I hope they will help someone, and inspire you to sit at your computer and start your own blog.

1. Why did you decide to become a blogger?
This is the most asked question, from people online and offline. I decided to become a blogger way back in 2006, it was the next logical step for me having spent a few years running and co-running forums, and meeting some wonderful friends, and getting engaged in good discussions.

I had been online, reading blogs, viewing videos on youtube and decided that I wanted to start my very own beauty blog. It was slow going at first, social media wasn't what it is now, and soon enough my first blog "Beauty & the Make up Bag" was born. Soon enough I started getting regular views and comments, and the buzz kept me pushing for more.

2. What was it like running a beauty blog?
My blog, Beauty Chic, was one of the hardest yet exciting times in blogging. After serveral years of running Beauty & the Make up bag I was finding it a challenge to blog, work full time and run a home, so I joined forces with my wonderful friend Ellie (from Ellie Squared) and Beauty Chic was born. It was easier with us both posting, 2 brains are always better than one.

3. How did you make a blog a success?
Now that is the million pound question. I firmly believe a good blog is friendly and approachable, makes you feel welcome, intrigued and desperate for more. But also, it doesn't have to be something you visit every day, every week or even every month. Its something thats there, and you can pop in and out when you are free.

I was lucky with Beauty Chic, we had an amazing run with an incredible amount of support; 2.4 Million hits, 56,000 unique views and over 15,000 subscribers. The support for Beauty Chic and the interact was amazing. It was a brilliant time of my life, but as all good things it had to come to an end.

4. Why did you stop blogging about Beauty?
The honest answer? I had nothing left to say. Don't get me wrong, I love beauty products and fashion and everything inbetween, but I started finding it hard to blog about it all the time. I wanted more variety and I wanted to be able to write about things I wanted to write about outside the niche, I wanted to write about things I was passionate about.

I also wanted a break, I had been blogging since 2006 (Its was 2012 by this point) and I needed some time off to relax and recuperate. We both needed time off, had our offline lives to focus on and things to be getting on with.

As you can see, Beauty Chic was incredibly successful, but for us, it was time to let it go.

5. How can I make my blog a success?
The honest answer is really hard work. You start from nowhere and you have to just keep going, even when it feels like you're just writing to yourself, keep going. Its not easy and you'll feel like giving up. Don't! If you work hard, persevere and keep producing top notch content it will all come good.

If you have a blog and are looking for exposure, why don't you join the Love, Amybecca Bloghop, you might even find some great new blogs to follow too.

6. What was it like starting over?
Starting over was exciting. I had nothing, no readership, no followers, nothing, but I was still excited to be back blogging and writing about what I wanted. It wasn't something I was used to having built up beauty chic into a successful blog with a strong readership.

This blog is my baby, I love the freedom I have to blog about whatever I want, from crafts to food recipes, controversial topics to lipsticks. If I want to blog about it, I can.

Starting from the bottom isn't easy, and all the hard work from Beauty Chic is flooding back. But I love it, if you ever see me out and about, the minute I sit down I will either be writing blog posts in my notebook or tweeting my latest article.

I have never felt more alive with my blogging and never so excited about the future.

7. How has your blogging changed over the years?
I think its been a natural progression as I have grown up. I started blogging fresh out of University, a young women with no idea about the world. Now I like to think in 7 years I am slightly older and a bit more wise, and I think that is reflected in my writing.

My life is also a lot different than it was, I am getting older and my own perceptions of my own life have changed. Things that were important to me when I was 21 no longer are, and in their place others have grown. Its exciting, as I feel like I am right at the very beginning of a new chapter.

8. Is it hard work?
Yes, incredibly hard work in the sense that if you're anything like me 99.9% of your time your mind is on your blog. Its frustrating being at work and having great ideas and not being able to get them down. Like I said earlier, blogging is hard work but equally its rewarding. And its so rewarding you don't even realise you're working hard because you love it so much.

9. What would you say is the hardest part about blogging?
Writers Block. No joke, or maybe we should call it Bloggers block. If you're a blogger you have been there, you're sitting infront of your computer, new post page layed out before you..but its blank. You sort of have a title and you vaguely know where you want the post to go, but nothing comes out. Also, I work my day job, co-run a craft business & blog (so yes, even more blogging!) so sometimes getting the time is tough.

10. Where do you see your blog in the future?
I just want to keep doing what I am doing, build up the blog, network, meet new people and if I can be even half as successful as Beauty Chic was, then I will be a very happy woman.

Thanks for taking the time to read this blog post. If you have any questions, tweet me @LoveAmybecca or leave me a comment and maybe your question will be featured next time :)

Writing & Me

For a long time I have been a blogger, 2009 is where it all began when I opened a little beauty blog called 'Beauty & the Make up Bag' where I wrote about make up and beauty products, did reviews and tutorials. It wasn't long before I was getting a good amount of views and took the big step into buying my own domain name. As the blog grew and grew I took the decision to move it to its own hosting and manage every aspect of it myself.

As I continued blogging I found I was becoming unable to meet the demand of every day blogging so joined forces with another blogging friend and 'Beauty Chic' was born. We blogged and contributed to Beauty Chic for two years, with beauty tips, tutorials and beauty videos. It was after much deliberation and after real life becoming busy and taking over that we decided to stop contributing to Beauty Chic. I decided to take some time out and not blog for a while.

But... I missed blogging. Truth be told I love writing and I love blogging, and although the break was nice I had missed it. So I decided to start writing again. It started with the blog for mine and my mums Craft business (Blanket Stitch) and then developing this blog. This time I decided to blog in the lifestyle genre, this way I could incorporate everything I love; cooking, Beauty, Crafting and everything and anything else I felt like blogging about.

Now I am enjoying blogging about everything that I am interested in, and exploring more subjects at the same time.

I hope you enjoy this blog, my writing, my craft blog ( http://www.theblanketstitch.co.uk/) if you are interested in a blogger or copywriter please check out my page below.

Stamping for love...my new love of Stamping!

It's been a while since I wrote a good long craft blog post on this blog, so I thought I would update you on my most recent crafting love...Stamping!

Introduced to stamping by my good friend from Laurart before Christmas, last week we had another good stamping session, and I loved it, I really do need to invest in some stamping bits and pieces and set about to make some wonderful creations!

Today I am going to show you the tag I made, its not officially my first tag as I had a play about before Christmas learning different techniques, but it is essentially my first tag where I knew what I was doing (-ish, I did have Laura to help and guide me through!)

First we gathered all the bits and pieces we would need; Distress inks, pads, card, stamps, sprays etc.

Next, with the blank card in front of me I had to decide what I wanted to do. I knew it would be for my boyfriend (due to me not getting him a valentines card) so I settled for a manly, grungy theme. But that was as far as my planning went I don't like to plan too much, I like to see how things develop).

I decided on three colours from Tim Holtz distressed inks (Crushed Olive, Gathered Twigs and Stormy Sky) and set about blending them together on my tag.

Next I used a water spray, spraying the water into my hand and flicked it over the card and then blotted it, giving it a vintage look.

Then I used a copper spray to add more to the tag.

Next I used a stamp with script across it and using a distress ink added that to my tag. Then I added more wording, then a pattern and a stamp with a film reel look.

Next, using blank archival ink, I stamped 'Love' and 'Listen to your heart'.

Then I pressed a hole out the top and added some grungy ribbon.

Last of all I stamped a heart shaped piece of card and wound rusty wire around it and attached it around the ribbon at the top of my tag.

And I am happy to report, he really liked it!
